Course Description
Application of structural concepts and functional group reactions to the synthesis of organic compounds. Factors in the design of multistep syntheses such as functional group transformation, elaboration of carbon chains, protecting groups and reaction stereochemistry. Examples from the literature of laboratory syntheses of complex molecules such as steroids, alkaloids and pharmaceuticals will be examined. Laboratory included. Research projects requiring novel syntheses are a major component of this course. Students are required to propose multi-step syntheses and then work to complete proposed syntheses in the laboratory.
