Course Description
The field of International Relations is structured around broad theories that help us explain general outcomes surrounding the distribution of power in the international system. While useful for their intended purposes, these abstract theories are often insufficient for students who are seeking to understand the behaviors of individual states. In order to explain the motivations of particular states as they interact with other actors, weneed to turn to more fine-grained analyses of foreign policy. Taking the United States as a case study, this course will explore the factors that influence how a state defines its foreign policy goals and the strategies it employs to execute those goals.
